How to Update Your Address With Social Security

If you receive Social Security benefits, remember to update your address if you move.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) needs your current address to send important notices and tax documents, including your annual SSA-1099. This applies to people receiving Social Security benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or Medicare. If you are not currently receiving benefits, you generally do not need to report an address change.

Even if your benefits are deposited directly into your bank account, you should keep your mailing address up-to-date. Updating your information before you move can help prevent missed notices or delays. The SSA also allows you to specify the date you want your new address to take effect.

There are three main ways to update your address: online, by phone, or in person.

Updating your address online:

If you receive retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, or have Medicare, you can usually update your address through your my Social Security account. Sign in, go to “My Profile,” select “Update Contact Information,” and enter your new address. You can choose whether the change takes effect immediately or on a future date. Review the information and submit your request.

If you don’t already have an account, you can create one online for free. Your account can also be used to view Social Security statements and access proof of benefits.

Supplemental Security Income recipients may be able to view their address online, but generally cannot change it through their account. People without a U.S. mailing address may also need to contact Social Security by phone or in person.

Updating your address by phone:

You can contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing can call 1-800-325-0778.

Tell the representative your new address and when you want the change to take effect. Wait times vary, but calling early in the morning, later in the afternoon, later in the week, or toward the end of the month may reduce your wait.

Updating your address in person:

You can also update your information at a local Social Security office. Consider calling ahead to schedule an appointment, although walk-ins may be accepted. Bring the necessary information and provide your new address and the date it should become effective.

Updating your address promptly helps ensure you continue receiving important Social Security correspondence without unnecessary interruptions.
